Supporting At-Risk Communities

Malezi School

https://www.mahtabe.org/malezi-centre

In spring of 2018, The Pema Chödrön Foundation provided a new grant to Malezi School in Nairobi, Kenya. Malezi is the first school in the community’s history to offer affordable education. It is creating sustainable, grassroots change through care and love. The poverty challenges and hunger issues in this particular slum are extreme. Our help will enable them to provide lunch daily to 220 undernourished children and 9 teachers.

In 2019, the Pema Chödrön Foundation increased the grant to Malezi School, allowing them to provide both breakfast and lunch to the teachers and children. Teachers report the meals program has had a profound impact on the well being of the community; they see improved attendance, class participation and exam performance. Perhaps more importantly, teachers share “the program has switched the mindset of the students from poverty focus to prosperity focus…the students feel they have the potential to succeed.”

Peacemaker Fellowship Operation

https://richmondcf.org/community-initiatives/public-safety/operation-peacemaker-fellowship/

The Operation Peacemaker Fellowship was established to reduce the number of young men involved in gun-related violence in the City of Richmond and North Richmond. Operation Peacemaker Fellows are former inmates committed to promoting and advancing peace, non-violence and healthy resolutions in the neighborhoods that they represent.

Listen to more about this innovative program to reduce gun violence and promote peace.

Surmang Foundation

Surmang Foundation is located in Yushu prefecture, a Tibetan community with the highest maternal and infant mortality rates in the world. Throughout the past decade, Surmang Foundation has operated free medical clinics providing community-based care and education to women, resulting in a notable reduction in maternal and infant mortality. In 2006 the Foundation opened a Community Health Worker project, training 40 village and nomadic women as barefoot doctors/birth attendants. By 2011 these Community Health Workers had reduced maternal mortality to zero.
